Midnite Hellion - Hour Of The Wolf Single (2013)
Witches Brew / ClawHammer PR -- Running Time 10:26

I first became aware of New Jersey Traditional Metallers Midnite Hellion at the tail end of 2012 when their track 'Spirit Possession' was included on Brutiful Metal Radio's huge, free compilation album download. That was a pretty decent track but since then there have been some lineup changes which brings us to 'Hour Of The Wolf'. This is a 7" vinyl only, two track single limited to 500 copies and shows a huge leap in progression!

Biggest change is that Midnite Hellion are now female fronted. PJ Berlinghof (ex Twilight Odyssey) is the lady behind the microphone and her voice, which actually reminds me in places of Jody Turner from 80's all female metal band Rock Goddess, is a perfect fit for them! This is proper old school Heavy Metal and it's superb. Fans of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Tank, Raven, Warlock and Diamond Head etc are going to be throwing the horns big time when listening to this.

'Hour Of The Wolf' is the track on Side A and it's everything you want from a classic Heavy Metal song. Great riff, vocals are spot on, catchy chorus and gang backing vocals. It takes me right back to those early days when a trip to the record store (remember them) had me coming home armed with goodies to a turntable and a volume knob always on 11! Side B 'The Morrigan' is equally as good with a riff that could quite happily sit on an early Maiden or Saxon album and it's all dispatched with masses of enthusiasm. Guitarists Dan Sclavi and Nick DiGiovacchino have nailed that authentic playing style with good solos that aren't flashy, just right for the song and the rhythm section of Bill Dripps (bass) and Drew Rizzo (drums) do the same. Production also takes me back but it still has a modern feel to cater for those that dig a little more clarity!

Midnite Hellion aren't reinventing the wheel, or anything else for that matter. but this is done so well that I don't give a damn. Trad Metal has made a big comeback in recent times and with bands like this around it's in good hands. Whether it's heavy or fast enough to appeal to younger metalheads is something to be considered but for all of us older, balder, fatter and slightly more saggy fans that were around at the dawn of time then this is a must have. With a full, debut album due in 2014 Midnite Hellion are a name to watch!
