Collibus - The False Awakening (2014) Unsigned -- Running Time 67:35
SCORE 10/10
Hello again faithful readers! Before I start this review properly I'm just going to say that swearing isn't big and clever but sometimes it does help you describe something in a certain way. Bearing that in mind, "FUCK ME SIDEWAYS, COLLIBUS ARE STAGGERINGLY GOOD!", 'The False Awakening', debut album from the Manchester based band (it was actually released in January but I was slow off the mark), has just become my favourite album of the year!
How many bands, big, small, signed or otherwise have ever been asked to play Download, Graspop, Sonisphere, Wacken and Bloodstock Festivals all in the same year? I think you'll find the answer was never, but Collibus have changed that in 2014. That'll give you some idea of how good this band are!
Collibus are a female fronted Progressive Metal band, but PLEASE don't switch off after reading that. They aren't a Gothic, Symphonic or Operatic band full of flowing skirts and flailing arms! Nope, this is full on Metal and Gemma Fox is blessed with the best voice I've heard for years! She also just happens to be backed by some of the most talented musicians you could wish for. If you don't believe me, then go and read the words of Dr Brain May (yes, that Brian May) and then believe, because he rates Collibus highly!
This band are Dream Theater, DGM, Nevermore and Scar Symmetry on steroids but with a female Devin Townsend on board. Technicality is absolutely astounding but where Collibus rate so highly, against many of their peers, is having the ability to write the most outstandingly engaging songs and then deliver them with a truck load of passion. At over an hour 'The False Awakening' may be pretty long, but there isn't one bit of it that doesn't leave me utterly spellbound and covered in goose bumps and I still want more when it's finished!
Forget Huntress and Halestorm who, for some reason, seem to get all the press. They pale into total insignificance next to Collibus as do so many bands. I really am going to have to rethink my scoring for albums. I cannot give this the mark I want because, as Spinal Tap proved, it would make no sense, so take half a mark off of everything else I've reviewed this year!
