Powerlord - The Awakening (2014)
Shadow Kingdom Records/Clawhammer PR -- Running Time 31:20

SCORE
9/10

Over the last few years, due to the popularity and re-emergence of certain genres of Metal and Rock, some record labels, such as Rock Candy, have specialised in re-mastering, re-releasing and re-introducing the public to 'lost gems'. Some of these are very good, some not so, where the myth of the band or the price of rare albums/demos on eBay has exceeded what they were actually capable of. However, once in a while, something comes along that is just utterly amazing! 'The Awakening' by long forgotten (in fact almost never heard of) Powerlord are the mini-album and band and, in this particular case, Shadow Kingdom Records have played a masterstroke because they are quite frankly incredible.

How Powerlord never made it beyond this one release or created a bigger splash is utterly mind bending to me. Recorded in Dallas, Texas during March 1986 'The Awakening' is simply Metal gold and the re-mastering job the label have done on this makes it sound like it was recorded last week not 28 years ago! It should have sold by the truck load but, even I, who loved seeking out bands of this nature back in the 1980's, had never heard of them until it dropped onto my desk a couple of months back.

If Classic US & Canadian Speed/Thrash Metal such as Exciter, Annihilator, Metal Church, Razor, Heathen, Savage Grace, Piledriver or any of the 'Big4', in their very early years, are your weapon of choice then Powerlord should have you frothing at the mouth and quite posibly in your underwear as well. It's only just over the half hour mark and six tracks but you'll be playing it again and again and banging your head to oblivion!

Of course, you mustn't expect anything original, don't forget when this was actually recorded but Dane Cook (Vocals), Tony Gourly (Guitars), Bob Gourley (Drums) and Brian Massey (Bass), if they are still around, need to be found, take a bow and then told to record a full length follow up...PLEASE! I know that's probably a long shot but I can dream! At the very least I now have 'The Awakening' and my CD collection feels a lot more complete with it there!
