deVIence - New Blood EP (2013)
Self Released -- Running Time 22:47

Anyone who says that there aren't very good new rock bands coming through these days to rival the 1980's needs their heads testing! The 80's was a fantastic time for rock & metal and it was a pleasure to actually be there living the dream, but for every good act there were dozens of duffers! People only seem to remember the good things and it gives a rose tinted view of what things were really like.

Why am I waffling? well...you see, this band deVIence, from London, have come along with their self released and financed debut EP 'New Blood', and it's perfectly titled! If this band had been around in the 1980's then believe me they would have been on The Sunset Strip regularly, tearing it up with all the so called 'greats' and eventually playing much larger venues. I caught these guys at the Rock & Metal Circus Festival recently and I'm left in no doubt as to the quality of the songs or the talent involved! Already in their short career they've been to LA to play 'The Viper Room' and 'Whisky a Go Go' on the Strip as well as respected venues in London 'Borderline', 'The 100 Club' and the 'O2 Islington'!

This EP is stacked with six fantastic songs and the only thing that lets it down slightly is the production and mix, but I suspect's down to budget limitations. It's the songs that matter though and in the case of deVIence the small matter of vocalist Giovanni Spano being a star in the making. This guy has already been in a touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar as well as other musical theatre endeavours, has the looks to melt more than a few hearts and a voice to match!

If you dig classic bands such as Guns N' Roses (when they were actually good), Tyketto, Giant, Tesla, Steelheart and newer bands such as Slash (with Myles Kennedy), Reckless Love, and the very sadly missed Shotgun Alley then this is going to be right up your street. 'Go Hard Or Go Home' and 'Lady Of The Night' kick things off superbly. Both uptempo rocking tracks with plenty of swing and groove. Just as you're expecting a similar song, third track 'Easy' comes along and is a cracking ballad that was made for holding your lighter up high in the air. Up next is the title track which is more of a blues rock burner. 'SSC (Sweaty Sex & Cigarettes) is sure to become a live favourite with its incredibly catchy chorus and final track Epiphany builds superbly with a cracking guitar solo.

Just because I've singled out the vocals doesn't mean that the rest of the band are in any way slouches. Donnie and Jim on lead & rhythm guitars, Ben on bass and drummer Olli are all excellent and there is a definite chemistry between them all. If deVIence can get a top notch producer on board and keep writing songs of this quality then they are going to go a long way. Brilliant stuff!
