Classic Rock never dies and there are plenty of bands around in 2015 to prove that point. Another to add their name to the hat are Black Whiskey. Recently signed to Rocksector Records, Heavy Train is their debut album which was released in February. Formed in 2012 Black Whiskey, far from being new kids on the block, are made up of four very talented musicians who have played in a variety of other Rock & Metal acts over the years! Arguably, vocalist Simon Gordon will probably be best known to some of you as the ex singer of Xentrix in the mid 1990's as well as Hellfighter!

Don't think for one minute that Black Whiskey sound anything like the thrash of Xentrix though because they are a completely different beast and they are also not a 'showcase band' for his talents. Regardless of that, Gordon proves what a great soul rock voice should sound like! Guitarist Kev Ingles (ex 3 States Blue, Weapon and Swampsnake) positively shines throughout this album, with a Blues Rock authenticity that only a seasoned musician can achieve and the rhythm section of bassist Mark T.Parkin (ex Prezence & Stargazer) and drummer Rich Bannister (ex Nakedium) provide a watertight and solid backing to drive the songs home!

Comparisons to other bands are pretty pointless in the Classic Rock genre, you'll all hear your own favourites because Black Whiskey are fabulous at what they do, but from a personal standpoint little snippets of Led Zep, Black Country Communion, Tesla and Thin Lizzy rear their collective heads. However, one name really does stand out, but it didn't hit me until I had listened to 'Heavy Train' about five times and that name is UFO. Ingles guitar work certainly reminds me of current UFO six string wonder Vinnie Moore and Gordon's voice is very reminiscent of Phil Mogg on several tracks, right down to his phrasing of lines!

Black Whiskey do not sound like a new band nor 'Heavy Train' a debut album. This bunch sound like they've been on the circuit, honing their craft, for years and it's very refreshing. They know how to pen a good, catchy tune with a big chorus. I've not seen them in a live setting yet, that will change at this year's SOS Fest, but I can see these songs going down extremely well! This is also well produced and the cover art, name and logo describe exactly what Black Whiskey are all about and that... is cracking Classic Rock!
