Savage Messiah - The Fateful Dark (2014)

SCORE
9/10

2014 is my second full year reviewing and, granted, I've got the bit between my teeth at the moment and I'm writing and listening to a lot but I really am being treated to some absolutely fabulous releases. Who said music is dying? Another to add to the ever growing list of crackers is the latest, third album 'The Fateful Dark' from London based Savage Messiah. I've always loved this lot, and have their first two albums, but they are just improving hand over first with each one, should now be considered the UK's premier proper young Heavy Metal outfit and if there were any doubts about the 'difficult third album syndrome' then be prepared to have them wiped from your face with a cleaver because 'The Fateful Dark' delivers a knockout blow!

This album is everything I absolutely adore about metal from its NWOBHM leanings, through Maiden and Priest at their best, ...Master/Justice/Black era Metallica, the Power Metal thump of gods Gamma Ray, the precision of Annihilator, Sanctuary and Nevermore right up to the Bay Area Thrash speed and aggression of Testament. There is even a touch of Whitesnake/Jorn Lande here and there. It's full of crunching riffs, brilliant soloing, hard as nails drumming & bass and when required huge dollops of melody with an impeccable vocal performance from Dave Silver who really is emerging as a big talent! Hell, if Metallica could write a song, nowadays, anywhere near 25% as good as the ones here we would hail it as the comeback of the century!

'Iconocaust' kicks off proceedings in true thrash style and it's a blinder. It sticks like glue and you'll be singing this one before it's finished for the first time (as well as nursing a very sore neck). 'Minority Of One' mixes the tempos up more, is still catchy as hell and the joint solos of Silver and Joff Bailey made me tingle! 'Cross Of Babylon' is full on thrash again and reminds me a little of Metallica's 'Damage, Inc'. 'Hellblazer' indeed blazes a trail of Power Metal with a chorus Priest would be more than proud of (as well as some fabulous drumming from Andrea Gorio), 'Live As One Already Dead' is a Heavy Metal ballad out of the top drawer and on and on it goes! Not forgetting Stefano Selvatico on bass Savage Messiah have arrived and if this album doesn't propel them big time to the next level then I'll chew my own arm off! Add to that great production, logo, artwork and packaging and you've got it all!

They really are going to be one of the highlights at this year's SOS Festival in Manchester (which I will be covering for this wonderful radio station) and have also been nominated in the 'Best New Band' category at the 2014 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in London! Remember the name, Savage Messiah are going places!
