Wardrum - Messenger (2013) Steel Gallery Records -- Running Time 63:48
Score 10/10
'Messenger' is the third album from Greek power metallers Wardrum, released last November, and before starting I have to send a huge thanks out to Ben Colton (Vocalist/Guitarist at Neverworld) for pointing me in the right direction, because I might otherwise have missed out on this awesome band album and band. This is about as close to Neo-Classical, Melodic Power Metal perfection as you can get and features two of the most talented performances I've heard in a LONG time in this genre.
Step forward vocalist Yannis Papadopoulos and guitarist Kosta Vreto and please take a bow. They are both absolutely stunning and could quite easily front and play for any of the BIG names in Power Metal. Kosta is a powerhouse performer and does not miss a note. Think Fates Warning, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Unisonic, Riot, Crimson Glory, Primal Fear, DGM, Rhapsody and I'm also easily going to include Queensryche and Judas Priest as well. He could do the lot and that is no throwaway statement! Add to that Kosta's astonishing guitar work which reminds me of Jason Becker, Tony MacAlpine, Marty Friedman or Malmsteens's early Rising Force days. If any of that lot breaks you out in a sweat then get ready for a complete eargasm listening to Wardrum!
Of course it would be very remiss of me to forget the other two musicians in this band. Kostas Scandalis (bass) and Stergios Kourou are also both fabulously talented and together these four are just outstanding. I just don't know what else to say and how many times I can say it! There are thousands of talented bands and artists all over the world but, personally, you only come across so many that elate you the way Wardrum do to me. I know I love the Power Metal genre and it's not for everyone but for those that do you just cannot afford to miss this album!
Fourteen songs, just over sixty minutes of music and not one second or note is out of place. Production is superb as is the artwork (created especially for the band by Piotr Szafraniec) and I'm now completely lost for words. This is going to get played again and again and thanks to my ever growing confidence in getting in touch with people, regarding music, I now have the whole Steel Gallery Records back catalogue to review which includes Wardrum's first two albums and Kosta Vreto's solo album! I'm already sweating in anticipation. Sublime!
