Silent Jack - Snakebite (2013)
Self-Released -- Running Time 34:17

Score:
7/10

I had never heard of Birmingham based team Silent Jack until recently when vocalist/guitarist Rich 'Stitch' Mason very kindly sent me their debut release 'Snakebite' to review and it's a very good listen. I have to be honest (as usual), and say I did double take when I saw the pretty juvenile cover art (which could ultimately put a few people off) but, that aside, Silent Jack provide a healthy dose of prime time Guns 'N Roses, Motley Crue & Cinderella coupled with other newer bands such as Knock Out Kaine & Crashdiet. This is dirty, catchy, sleazy and full of fun!

Rich has a great voice for this type of Rock and very definitely an air of Axl Rose (when he was good) about his delivery. Lead guitarist Adam Carson throws some decent solos into the mix and the rhythm team of bassist Dickie Spider and drummer Scott Carson hold everything together nicely. Opening two tracks 'Brand New Start' and 'King Cobra' are an excellent assault on the ears and easily the best songs on this release. That's not to say the remaining five tracks aren't good though, all I'll say is that 'Love Factory' is probably about a minute too long and ballad 'Angels Cry' doesn't quite have the big hook and build up to draw you in totally but this is still a more than admirable attempt from a young band, especially as they weren't brought up within a stone's throw of the Sunset Strip! For a self release this has also been pretty nicely produced, with a fat sound where the drums and bass get equal billing with the vocals and guitar.

By all accounts Silent Jack put on a very entertaining live show as well so I'll look forward to catching them gig at some point as well. They've got the look, the delivery and seemingly the right attitude so all they really need to do for their next release is get some decent artwork completed for the cover. Certainly a band to keep an eye on!
