Face Off - The Colour Of Rain (2013)
Maple Metal Records -- Running Time 41:14

Face Off are slightly unusual in that they come from Belgrade, Serbia, hardly a hotbed of successful metal or rock bands, but you certainly wouldn't know it from listening to them. 'The Colour Of Rain' is their debut album, although the tracks were recorded between 2011/2012, and their chosen sound, on this album at any rate, is female fronted alternative metal in the vein of Lacuna Coil and Evanescence!

Originally formed in 2006 only vocalist Marija Kovacevic and guitarist Stefan Vitasovic. remain from the lineup that recorded these tracks, which could explain why their Facebook page says that future songs will include a whole array of new influences. At any rate if you like the above mentioned bands as well Within Temptation then you could do a lot a worse than checking out Face Off!

'The Colour Of Rain' is a solid album but not one that blows me away. Now, that's more than likely to do with the fact that I'm a bit nonplussed about this type of music rather than Face Off doing anything wrong or being 'bad'. The guitars are well played and there are some very chunky riffs, the opening title track being a good example. There are also some gothic undertones which are quite good and make the music a little more diverse plus everything is very well produced, but of course it's the vocals I really have a problem with. Kovacevic can certainly hold her own within the style and she's not out of tune anywhere it's just her alt delivery which, personally, does absolutely nothing for me and lumps Face Off into a heavily populated genre with nothing to really distinguish them from the crowd.

Face Off have been quite successful in their home country. That doesn't surprise me in the faintest and they will certainly gain a following further afield. However, they need something more individual to make waves and with three new members and a shift in style to include quite diverse influences such as Gojira, Isis, Enya and Bjork for the next album then that may well be what they are trying to do! Of course you can write down all the influences you want but it doesn't necessarily mean you're ever going to sound like any of them so we'll have to wait and see what happens next!
