Kill Ritual – The Serpentine Ritual (2012)
Scarlet Records - Running Time 58:38

When Imagika finally called it a day in 2010 guitarist Steven Rice and tub thumper Wayne DeVecchi wanted to continue working on new material together and ‘Kill Ritual’ was born. Looking for seasoned players to join the ranks proved very fruitful with guitarist Roberto Proietti (ex Eldritch) and bassist Danyael Williams (ex Dark Angel) fitting perfectly. With that solid base, to then unveil, unknown Bay Area vocalist, Josh Gibson might seem like an odd choice but debut album ‘The Serpentine Ritual’ has arrived to prove people wrong and it pretty much succeeds on all counts.

Why was Josh chosen as singer? It’s because he has a fairly unique delivery and can utilise a wide variety of rock and metal styles to very good effect. To be fair he is actually a bit of a find and is certainly the link that’s makes this band stand out from many others. I’ve also done a little research and I disagree with a lot of reviewers saying that ‘Kill Ritual’ are a thrash band. This isn’t thrash, it’s a rip roaring, kick ass heavy metal record pure and simple. Influences I heard included Judas Priest, Metal Church, King Diamond and Annihilator. Add a little bit of another new band Psychothermia to the mix and you have ‘Kill Ritual’. Now, that’s not to say that this band are unoriginal, far from it in fact. Along with the vocals there are some great, slightly off kilter riffs and solos plus bass guitar and drumming that hits you square in the stomach, which all add to the enjoyment, because you are never quite sure where the album is going to go next. However, it never loses the foot tapping, fist pumping catchiness of a real heavy metal album. There isn’t really any point in picking out individual songs because they are all pretty good. Expertly mixed by King Diamond’s Andy La Rocque at his own Sonic Train Studio in Sweden, ‘The Serpentine Ritual’ isn’t an out an out classic but it’s a damn fine debut. With ‘Kill Ritual’ having already confirmed that they are well on the way to writing and recording album number two then I will be following them very closely!
