Ruthless Steel - Die In The Night EP Review Ep_cov11

Do you want to take a trip to the first half of the 1980’s either to reminisce or to discover, what classic Heavy Metal sounded like? If the answer to that is yes then you should certainly check out Ruthless Steel and their debut EP ‘Die In The Night’ because they will give you a pretty good idea. Hailing from Athens, Greece, a country that has recently started to produce some great bands, possibly due to the rise and rise of Gus G & Firewind, plus of course his tenure with Ozzy, there are two things you should know about Ruthless Steel! Firstly they have a female singer, the very talented and attractive Aliki K and secondly, quite incredibly, they have only been together since May 2012!!

Of the four tracks on ‘Die In The Night’ ‘Ruthless Steel’, ‘Power Of Hate’ and the title track are pure, authentic, traditional, no bullshit Heavy Metal with power, and a mighty scream and ‘Heart On Fire’ is a fine power ballad with a mighty scream, proving that the band aren’t just one trick ponies! Aliki is very ably backed by guitarist Constantine P, bassist Nick C and drummer Simos K and together they create a sound that whisked me back to the days of Chastain, Warlock, Hellion and Rock Goddess. Of course back in the 80’s many female singers were fronting bands purely based on their looks and nothing else, but you don’t have to worry about that with Ruthless Steel. Production is good without being flashy or cluttered, in fact I like to think that the band have aimed for an authentic sound in this department as well and it works. Sure there are a few little rough edges and Ruthless Steel’s music is hardly original but when it gets your foot tapping and your air guitar comes out of its invisible case, who cares? I don’t, and when you consider the band have only been in existence for 9-10 months then I think that says quite a lot about their ability!
Currently gigging around their home country, Ruthless Steel certainly deserve to be heard by a wider audience and if this EP is anything to go by then a full length album is going to be one to look forward to!
