Biotoxic Warfare - Lobotomized (2015) Slaney Records/Future PR Running Time - 38:59
SCORE 8.5/10
Greece has always been a country with a healthy Rock & Metal underground. They (and Cyprus) welcome the larger acts, who tour there, like Gods and you've only got to listen or watch many of the live albums and DVD's that metal bands have recorded in those countries to know the fans go absolutely rabid. Greece also has a huge roster of its own bands and Biotoxic Warfare are one of the latest attempting to add their name to the list. Formed in 2012 and from Heraklion on the beautiful island of Crete, Biotoxic Warfare are a Modern Thrash/Death Metal band with hints of a Blackened underbelly and 'Lobotomized' is their very enjoyable debut album.
This is certainly no generic Thrash revival act, although, as you know, I have a healthy respect for many of the newer Thrash bands and am a fully signed up fan of the German & Bay Area originals. Biotoxic Warfare embellish the darker elements of Kreator with Obituary Death, Morbid Angel, Vectom (a little known German Speed/Thrash band from the mid 1980's) and add a huge dollop of Slayer on top! 'Lobotomized' is also blessed with a thumping production, mixed and mastered courtesy of Vaggelis Theodorakis. This production might not endear itself to some of the Thrash & Death purists out there but it's 2015 and technology has moved on. It's not over produced though and one thing has remained the same and that is you can only feel the bass guitar of Panagiotis Polioudakis, not actually hear it! That aside, this all sounds wonderful and armed with some excellent cover art that perfectly suits the bands material this is certainly one of the newer bands you need to check out!
Opening, three minute instrumental 'Mors Indecepta' is not your average 'intro', it's a song in its own right, it builds slowly, to a frenetic conclusion, and what it actually introduces is the quality of musicianship you are going to be attacked with for the following 39 minutes! Leading the way is the wonderful playing of guitarist George 'Dimator' Dimitrakakis, whose Slayeresque solo work sounds beautiful throughout the album. Joined by the brutal riffing of rhythm guitarist Stelios Sfendilakis and machine gun drumming of Orestis Drapaniotis (don't you just love how these Greek names sound) you are left in no doubt that Biotoxic Warfare can handle their instruments WELL! That leaves vocalist Mike Kavalos who arrives on the next track 'Proclaim The Gospel Of Lies'. His bestial death growl is both vicious but surprisingly clear and understandable and that is good news because lyrically 'Lobotomized' is a pretty intriguing listen. 'Dysphoric Reality' has an intro and climax straight out of the Jeff Hanneman (R.I.P.) songbook and is a highlight, the title track adds some twists and turns pace wise and album closer 'As We Rot (Promises Of Heaven)' is a thunderous hail of bullets on the senses!
'Lobotomized' is eight tracks and just under forty minutes of quality and when it concludes you press play again. Biotoxic Warfare have certainly put their name on the map with this release and it bodes very well for a very bright future!
