Obzidian are one of the latest signings to the fabulous Rocksector Records roster and yet again, Mark & Lynne have proved they aren't scared to take on all genres of Metal and Rock as long as the band in question is high quality. Obzidian are definitely high quality and with their third album 'Concrete Psychosis' have released a near faultless display of Modern Technical Thrash with masses of groove and just the slightest hints of Black, Death and Doom! Think Meshuggah, Sepultura, Beholder, Testament and Pantera, well that's what I can here at least!
Formed as far back as 2001, it wasn't until the release of their self-titled debut in 2007 that they started to establish their current sound. 2012 saw the release of second album 'Damned Eternal', which was well received and now with Rocksector behind them and a bludgeoning set of twelve fresh tracks they are ready to take it to the next level! Not only are Obzidian as heavy as an axe to the brain their technical prowess is amazing. 'Concrete Psychosis' (great album title by the way) is full of brutal, but concise playing.
Matthew Jenks (Vocals) has an ungodly like roar but it's full of variation, Barry Foster (Guitars) seems to come up with groove laden masterpiece riffs at the drop of a hat and his solo work is out of the top drawer. That leaves the rhythm section of Matthew Jeffs (Bass) and Paul Hayward (Drums & Backing Vocals) who not only make a wonderfully tight backbone but also dance with the guitar riffs at just the right moments. Opener 'Their Legacy Has Failed' leaves you in no doubt as to what Obzidian are all about, it's a crushing first song. Certain songs, such as 'Chaos Catalyst' are slower but no less brutal and even contain the stirrings of 70's Black Sabbath, if you listen carefully. There is actually huge variation on 'Concrete Psychosis' and that makes it a joy to listen to again and again because you discover something new each time.
Obzidian have released a fine album which should see them not only appreciated by people that love their Thrash but also a much wider audience. This band is still growing and it will be incredibly interesting to see where they take things next. You know, I keep waiting for Rocksector to sign a dud, just so I know they are in fact human! I'm still waiting!
