Roarback - Echoes Of Pain (2014) Mighty Music/Target -- Running Time: 37:02
SCORE 7.5/10
'Echoes Of Pain is the great debut album from Danish band Roarback. Only formed in 2011 and with ages around 19-20 years old these guys manage to sound convincingly Old School in a completely 'no bullshit' way. This is Death/Thrash as it is meant to sound. Heavy, Dark & Raw! Playing this through for the first time took me back to early Slayer, 'War & Pain' era Voi Vod, Possessed, Havok and Destructor (add your own early influences as you see fit).
'Peoples Hate' and 'I Will Find You' kick the album off and are almost too quick, the drums almost falling over themselves to catch up, but from third track 'Voices Of Deception' onwards Roarback completely find their stride, the songs slow slightly and the time changes from fast to thunderous mid pace are superb. I was headbanging like a loon and imagine they would be a great, fun band to see live. There are no tricks up any sleeves here. This five piece are playing their own instruments and it's a real enjoyable throw back, especially from such a young bunch!
Dennis Ullehes has a great growl. His phrasing is Thrash but sound wise it's a Death Metal treat. Guitarists Andreas Rohde: Guitars & Andreas Dixø make good use of the repetitive riffing, especially on the slower sections and their soloing is very reminiscent in sound to the Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman (R.I.P.) Slayer partnership. All the solos are a little 'off kilter'. We all like a bit of bottom end, well I do anyway, and bassist Mikkel Stender provides a nice deep sound to give the rhythm the oomph needed. Lastly Kåre Holm-Sørensen pounds away at the kit like a trip hammer.
Roarback aren't original or full of complicated technique but they don't need to be. If tracks like 'Warmachine', 'Face The Sun', 'Systematically Murdered' or 'My World' don't get your head of feet moving then you've obviously been listening to too much Black Veil Brides!! If you want Metal with attitude but without an ego. Full on, smash you in the face Death/Thrash Metal then you could do a lot worse than by giving Roarback and 'Echoes Of Pain' a listen. This all sounds very promising!
