The Brew - Control (2014) Jazzhaus Records/Stampede Press -- Running Time 35:09
SCORE 9/10
This is another album that should have been reviewed a little more quickly so I apologise hugely for not getting around to it sooner (that's what happens when you have two bosses cracking the music whip!!), but I'm here now and if you haven't heard of The Brew before then you are in for a Classic Rock and Blues treat!
I first heard of this trio from Grimsby, UK when I reviewed their 'Live In Europe' album back in 2012 (it's a cracking release by the way) and, as promised, I have since gone on to check out their previous three studio albums which are all fab. Now they have unleashed 'Control' and I can say, with my hand on heart, that this is the best one yet! This is 35 minutes of Blues Rock excellence that puts the recent output by Joe 'I now release an album every month' Bonamassa to shame. Lead vocalist and guitarist Jason Barwick and the superb father/son team of Tim Smith (bass, vocals) and Kurt Smith (drums, percussion) are a pure force to be reckoned with. 'Control' reeks of authenticity from Led Zeppelin to Black Country Communion, is an absolute joy to listen to and it's a travesty that this band do not have a much bigger profile!
Every one of the cleverly named tracks from opener 'Repeat' to closer 'Rewind' are massively energetic slabs of three men who appear to eat, sleep and breathe ROCK. So many bands that I've reviewed recently, especially in the Classic Rock and Blues genres seem to get lots of press and large followings, but, to me, are missing that vital 'magical ingredient' which makes them worth all the fuss. There are no such issues with The Brew! Every vocal line, riff, solo, bass line and drum beat is steeped in so much sweat that I want to pull on my cowboy boots, hit a bar, order a bottle, put my feet up and imagine that these guys are set up in the corner of the room playing their hearts out!
What's even better is that they wanted to capture their live sound in the studio so 'Control' is recorded pretty much completely live, superbly produced by the awesome Toby Jepson (Little Angels, The Answer) and mixed by Steve Harris (Santana, U2). There is a reason why The Brew have supported ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and other top bands and that's because they are brilliant!
My review of 'Live In Europe' finished with the following sentence "I’m very interested in what The Brew will deliver with the next album because that will seal the deal one way or the other"! Well, they have sealed the deal and delivered a superb album. Now what you lot need to do is go and listen to and buy it because you will not be disappointed!
