Anubis Gate - Sheep EP (2013) Nightmare Records -- Running Time 20:20
No-one has asked me to review this free EP from Progressive Metal heavyweights Anubis Gate, but when a band as good as this decide to release a free twenty minute EP, for the fans, because they didn't quite have their new album ready on time then the very least I can do is give it some exposure! Included with the EP the band have been good enough to provide all of the artwork and a Press Release for everyone (that's more than some official releases can manage)!
Apparently these three tracks were left over after the newest recording sessions. First up is a new original song 'Destined To Remember' and even though an alternative version of this will appear on the new studio album 'Horizons' (due early 2014), if this is a taste of what to expect then be prepared for a brilliant album. Even with some recent lineup changes Anubis Gate appear to be ready to deliver big time! It has a huge chorus and needless to say the whole performance is spot on! Remaining tracks 'Sheep' and 'Broken Wings' are cover versions and the band have made a great job of both of them. 'Sheep' originally recorded by Pink Floyd on their fabulous 'Animals' album isn't necessarily a song you would expect to get the cover treatment and anyone doing so is never going to really compete with the original, but, Anubis Gate have made it their own and it's extremely enjoyable to listen to their interpretation. Likewise, whether you like it or not, Mr. Mister's 'Broken Wings is an iconic track of its time and Anubis Gate have once again delivered a very credible version in their own style, without sacrificing the beautiful melody of the original. They recorded this because a fan suggested it would be a great song to try out and the band agreed!
This EP is impeccably produced and played, as Anubis Gate themselves admit it's the fact that they are perfectionists that the new album has been delayed but what I love about them is that their music never sounds sterile or over produced. You only have to listen to any of their previous five albums to be immediately aware of that. If you are new to the band then, even though the 'Sheep' EP isn't completely indicative of their sound, this is still a great place to start your journey. As for everybody else, well this is free so what are you waiting for. Anubis Gate are up there with the big guns of the genre as far as I'm concerned. Brilliant stuff!
