Deicide - In The Minds Of Evil (2013)
Century Media Records -- Running Time 35:13

Deicide are back with their 11th Studio album 'In The Minds Of Evil' and even though it's not a classic it's definitely something of a return to form for 'Glen Benton' and his death metal cohorts!

I'm not going to get bogged down here but get straight to the it! Plus points on this new album are many. If you are a long standing Deicide fan then you'll notice immediately that Benton's vocals are much better than they have been for a long time. He seems more focussed and his delivery just sounds heaps better than it has done on more recent albums. Lyrically things also seem to have taken a very slightly more mature turn. Whilst the Christ bashing is still there in abundance, there are only so many times you can write about this subject without it getting extremely boring and Benton finally seems to have realised this. Guitarists 'Kevin Quirion' and 'Jack Owen' both put in amazing performances. Riff wise these are some of the best and most vicious Deicide have written for a while and the solo work is easily the best the band have delivered. They are well thought out, clinical without being lifeless and incredibly fast without being full of ego! 'Steve Asheim' puts in a mesmerising display on the drums. If you want to learn death metal drumming then you have to listen to this man play, just incredible. Last but not least the production is also pretty damn good. 'Jason Suecof' (Death Angel, Battlecross, Trivium) is the man responsible and he's given Deicide a thick, modern sound, but it also embraces an old school feel!

On the downside the bass sound is a little thin and lost but then Glen doesn't pull huge shapes and complex arrangements on the bass so it's not too much of an issue. While the riffs might be good, vicious and fast, when the album is finished, you do tend to struggle to remember them, overall all the songs feel pretty similar to one another and you are certainly not going to be mistaken for thinking anything here is particularly original! We are also looking at yet another album that comes in well short of the forty minute mark, something that is happening on a very regular basis recently!

While that may be the case, this is still the best album Deicide have put out in quite a while and if you're an older fan who has perhaps lost your way with the band then this will certainly be worth your time and effort. Likewise, new fans will also be drawn to the good production and the slightly more accessible nature of the music compared to what has gone before. Even though Decide have now been around for quarter of a century and gone through their fair share of controversy there is still plenty of 'death' left in the tank yet!
