Diamond Plate - Pulse (2013)

Chicago based Diamond Plate return with their sophomore album 'Pulse' and this time they also have a new vocalist/bassist 'Matt Ares'. Signed very early on by Earache after a couple of very promising EP's they released their thrash laden debut 'Generation Why?' in 2010 and even though it was good it didn't quite live up to the promise of the EP's. Now three years on we have 'Pulse' and I'm afraid it's all gone a 'bit south'. It is an acceptable album of course and there are some very good riffs, but the songs just aren't memorable enough and Ares' vocals are a mixed bag.
Diamond Plate appear to have had a rethink about their musical direction and seem to have gone down the Metallica route circa '...And Justice For All' or Megadeth's 'Rust In Piece' However the quality and catchiness of either of those albums is missing and Diamond Plate come across like a misfiring engine unable to hit third gear. It just feels lacklustre in execution musically and the same goes for the new vocalist who honestly sounds a little bored with everything!
Occasionally a riff hits you and you find yourself nodding your head but it doesn't happen anywhere near enough and when the album finished I found myself looking for what was next in my review pile rather than wanting to press play again. It's a shame really and had this been the first recorded output from a new band I wouldn't be sounding quite as harsh but Diamond Plate showed much promise early on and they haven't capitalised on that. Perhaps they signed to a big label too soon, considering their ages, or indeed the new lineup needs to gel together more before they try anything too different, either way the army of revival thrash bands out there aren't going to be quaking in their boots on hearing this!
Of course being signed to a bigger label means that 'Pulse' is going to be pushed to many younger fans who will think this the best the genre has to offer and that's also a shame because there are loads of bands who are unsigned or on smaller labels who are producing much better material than this. Sorry Diamond Plate, 'Pulse' is ok but no cigar this time!
