HeadrusH – The Best Of...So Far (Compilation Album Review) Headru11

What I have here is a compilation, snappily entitled, ‘The Best Of...So Far’ by Stoke-On-Trent, UK based band HeadrusH, who up until recently had completely passed me by. They were actually formed in 2002 and spent their early years gigging relentlessly to build a healthy following. In more recent times they have shared the stage with many well known artists including Skid Row, Airbourne, Bruce Dickinson, Saxon, Uriah Heep, UFO, MSG and Demon, have played several high profile UK Festivals and received some very positive press. Having already released an EP ‘Guns & Glory’ and debut album ‘Just Bring It On’ (both in 2010) this disc brings everything up to date in preparation for a new studio album, which is due to be recorded very soon.

HeadrusH are a five piece Classic Hard Rock Metal band and they are a great listen. There is a definite NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) feel to proceedings topped off with a huge dollop of Sleaze which makes for a strange but fantastic combination Think of an unlikely marriage between Tyketto, UFO and Skid Row and you are on the money. Leading from the front vocalist Andy Law has a cracking voice, full of Axl Rose (before he lost the plot), Sebastian Bach and UFO’s Phil Mogg. Guitarists Dan ‘Oggy’ Ogden and Ian Lynam play as if the world was about to end (there are some awesome solos) and bassist Josh ‘Tabbie’ Williams and drummer Tom Bevan drive the songs forward, as any good rhythm section should. There is good variety in pace showing that HeadrusH certainly are not one dimensional and the songs on this CD are all pretty well produced. There are a couple of tracks that don’t quite hit the mark for me, but considering this is a compilation of their output so far then perhaps that is to be expected.

Overall, I am very impressed with the music on offer here; it shows that you don’t need to be American to write a good sleazy rocker, albeit with a metal underbelly. Many UK bands are doing this sort of stuff recently but HeadrusH (along with Knock Out Kaine) are probably the best I’ve heard. They have promised that the new album will be harder and more melodic! Check them out, you might be pleasantly surprised, I am certainly looking forward to see what they come up with next.
