Chris Appleton - Restless (2015) Rocksector Records Running Time 38:45
SCORE 8.5/10
For those that have never heard of Vocalist/Guitarist Chris Appleton before and at the risk of repeating myself for those that have, then it's worth mentioning just how busy this young man is. He was a founding member of UK Hard Rock trio Fury UK. When bassist and brother Luke Appleton got offered the chance to join US heavyweights Iced Earth, Fury UK was put on hold and Chris formed and is the frontman for Metal band Absolva who have released two superb studio albums and a live album & DVD in a relatively short time period. They continue to make serious progress in the UK and Europe where they tour relentlessly. On top of that Chris is also the guitarist in original AC/DC vocalist Dave Evans' band and the guitarist in ex Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley's solo band. He has also found time to be part of the Wizz Acoustic side project put together by his good friend Wizz Wizzard. All that tires my hands just from typing it so it's fair to say Chris must have some serious cardio to keep himself so busy.
But wait...Chris is now releasing his own solo, mainly acoustic album 'Restless' and has called on brother Luke and friend Wizz to join him for the ride. Calling the album 'Restless' is a very apt title as Chris obviously doesn't know what the term 'sit down and take a break' is! Indeed the accompanying PR blurb sees him say that if he had the chance he would quite happily be on tour every day of the year as that's what he loves doing, therefore he tries to make that happen by doing lots of different things musically!
'Restless' is indeed different from what has gone before, unless you heard some of the recent Wizz Acoustic project, because that will give you some idea of what to expect. What is included is a selection of original acoustic songs, acoustic versions of both Fury UK and Absolva tracks and a beautiful cover of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Mama I'm Coming Home' Chris's voice is instantly recognisable and very good and so what if there are a couple of wobbles here and there, this is about emotion, not perfection. He is also an incredibly talented guitarist, but again it's about feel and not the amount of notes played and some of the work contained on 'Restless' is superb. I'm not quite as keen on 'How Will I Feel When You're Gone' because the vocal melody exactly matches the guitar and it feels a little leaden, but other than that this is another fine album to add to an already large and diverse catalogue of work.
Currently on a short tour of the UK and Europe to promote this album to be followed by an extensive Absolva tour and writing for the third Absolva album there is absolutely no slowing this man down. Goodness knows what he'll want to do next!
