Unhoped – Die Harder (2011) Album Review Unhope10

Unhoped – Die Harder (2011)
Self Released -- Running Time 29:25

After reviewing and thoroughly enjoying 'Nuclear Death', the newest EP from Finnish band Unhoped earlier in the year, I wanted to go back and listen to their debut album from 2011 'Die Harder' and although it doesn't quite match the EP in quality (only because their new songs are even stronger), you do have to remember that this album is two years older and that it was self released. Considering those things what you have is another excellent Thrash/Death Metal album that is very worthy of your attention and it's understandable why it got such great reviews at the time of its release.

If you are still unfamiliar with Unhoped then they take thrash bands such as Kreator, Destruction and Exodus and merge that sound with the more death sounding Sodom, Obituary and Possessed. Throw in a touch of classic Slayer and Venom, some excellent and modern sounding production and you have a band who could probably flay you at ten paces given half the chance. At just under thirty minutes in length 'Die Harder' isn't the longest album in history but it grabs you by the throat and squeezes hard and you'll be thankful it doesn't last longer, until that is you press play again, because believe me you'll be doing that quite a bit.

Kicking off with the ninety second instrumental opener 'Entering The World Of Pain' (a very apt title) which then merges into the thumping first track proper 'Shattered Shield' 'Die Harder' is a rip roaring ride. Vocalist 'Jyri Luostarinen' has a great harsh vocal that mixes Venom's 'Cronos' with 'Rob Dukes' from Exodus and he is backed up with the fantastic skills of guitarists 'Kalle Laanto' and 'Aku Paasu', bassist 'Samu Parvianen' and drummer 'Mikko Huisko'. My favourite track is the wickedly titled 'Priest's Collar On Serpent's Neck' which even has a riff in its midst that is reminiscent of Anvil's 'Metal On Metal'!

What I really like about Unhoped is that, like all good thrash or death bands, they know when to speed up and slow down meaning that those slower sections hit you like a trip hammer, but they do it with a ton of melody included. If you dig your thrash and death then Unhoped really are one of the better new bands trying to build on the classic sound and 'Die Harder' and 'Nuclear Death' should be on your wish lists. Great stuff
