Antipope – 3 Eyes Of Time (2013) Album Review Antipo11

Antipope – 3 Eyes Of Time (2013)
Violent Journey Records -- Running Time 45:16

Just as I was about to start reviewing and listening to ‘3 Eyes Of Time’, the third album from Finnish Metallers ‘Antipope, it was announced that they were disbanding. Having been around since 2004 they feel that their creative goal has been reached and as such want to go out with their heads held high. As I have not heard their previous material, I only have this album, for now, to sum up if I think they have been successful.

On first listen, I wasn’t at all sure about what I was hearing, but Antipope have created an album that demands repeated plays and by the time I had listened to the unusual concoction of sounds and ideas about six times it had got right under my skin! With this album Antipope seem to be sitting in the industrial, gothic, progressive, doom & electronic metal genres along with a hint of black and death metal (which is apparently where they started out). Tiamat, Type O Negative, Rammstein, Gothminister, Samael, Fear Factory and even HIM are all good reference points but there is just something a little different about the way Antipope deliver the songs. Opening track ‘Close’ is very reminiscent of Rammstein and paves the way for a chilling and dark album that warms you as the melodies begin to take hold of your senses. ‘Exposure’ is a great example of a track whose tune envelops you the more you listen, although most of the songs draw you in, but just when you think you are starting to understand it, closing track ‘Guiding Light’ kicks you in the nether regions with a rousing dose of fast but catchy black metal.

Mikko Myllykangas (Vocals & Bass), Juhu Rikberg and Annti J. Karjalainen (Guitars) and Tuska E. (Drums) have made an extremely eclectic, diverse and interesting album for their swansong and I find it a shame that I’m only just discovering them as they decide to call it a day as I think they really could have gone on to create some fantastic music. Antipope certainly won’t be for everyone, but if you enjoy stretching the grey matter beyond the norm every once in a while, you could really find something worthy here. I certainly have!
